Class of 2014 guard Kameron Chatman picked up an important offer last week.
SALEM, OR – I spent an evening at the Oregon Under
Armour College View Showcase last week to sneak a peek at some prospects
from the Pacific Northwest. There were a handful of players that jumped
out.
Perhaps the biggest news of the event came from Kameron Chatman, a
class of 2014 guard from Portland (Ore.) Jefferson, was offered a
scholarship from Gonzaga. This isn’t surprising, really. Chatman is one
of the top prospects in the Pacific Northwest. He’s a total match-up
problem because of his point guard skills in a small forward body. He’s a
long term player to watch. Gonzaga won’t be the only high-major offer
he reels in.
Jake Ehlers of Corvallis (Ore.) High School is shaping up to be a
nice mid-level player for the mid-majors. He’s a do-everything kind of
big man. At 6-foot-6, he doesn’t have ideal height and he isn’t the most
impressive athlete. His value is his self-awareness. He knows who he
is, what he can do and what his strengths are. Ehlers has Portland,
South Francisco, Weber State, Portland State, Washington State, Oregon
State and others
In a perfect world, Vancouver (Wash.) big man Caleb Dressler said
he’d like to commit to a school in August and sign in November.
Currently he has offers from Cal Poly, San Francisco and Portland State.
He’s visited Gonzaga and Washington unofficially this summer. Dressler
said he’s heard from all of the Pac-12 schools except the Arizona
schools, USC, UCLA and Colorado.
Seattle Prep has been the home to several of the top prospects from
the Emerald City over the past decade. Josh Martin could be next. He was
the most promising player for the Seattle Friends of Hoop team. The
class of 2014 forward is longer than his 6-foot-6 frame suggests. He’s a
hustle player to the fullest extreme. If Martin continues to fill out
his long frame, watch out. If not, he is still an attractive mid-level
prospect.
I’ve been a big believer in point guard L.J. Westbrook of North Salem
since seeing him in June at the Rose City Showcase. The 6-foot-2 rising
junior has great speed, great length, great upside and plenty to like.
West Coast Conference schools are evaluating him while Oregon State and
Washington State are sneaking a peek, too.
Zach Gengler was a nice revelation at the event. The 6-foot-3 guard
from Silverton (Ore.) was Westbrook’s right hand man throughout the
event. Gengler, a rising junior, is coming off a good start to July from
the Pangos event. He is also coming off a sophomore season where he
averaged 20 points a game.
ALL EYES ON US
Oregon State, Washington State, Washington, Portland, Penn,
Princeton, Montana State, UC Irvine and Seattle all had assistant
coaches at the Under Armour Showcase on Thursday night.
